1959 Tweed Fender Champ Wood Cabinet
2009 September 17
The 1959 tweed Fender Champ amplifier featured a sturdy pine cabinet covered in (drum roll, please…) diagonal stripe tweed cloth. The amp cabinet itself uses finger joints which look just like it sounds — not all that sexy, but interesting nevertheless.
As you can see, the finger joints in these wood cabinets were so ugly that Fender had no choice but to cover them. I’ve heard that the top of these cabinets were additionally secured with dowels to help support the weight of the metal chassis, but haven’t seen an uncovered cabinet to confirm if this is the case.
